Our story
The Founder of the company grew up in the small community of Kerrisdale in South Vancouver where he started his journey at the age of 16 as a young entrepreneur with an obsession for business and innovative ideas. His first venture included trading lumber with loggers in Northern BC, buying old cedar stumps from cleared logging sights, and bringing the stumps down to the coast for further dimensional cuts to be sold to wood beehive makers. The business proved successful for a few years before the decreasing supply and profitability eventually closed the door. By the age of 20, the Founder began offering junk removal services to residents and businesses in Richmond and throughout Vancouver.
It was during this time, that he discovered his passion and love for the scrap metal industry and developed close relationships with successful business owners in the recycling industry. As a sole proprietor, the Founder would collect all the scrap metals and store them inside storage units until there would be enough quantity for a full container load to ship out. The job was very labor-intensive due to the lack of equipment and physical yard location. During the first 2 years of business, the Founder would load containers by hand-bombing 35,000-40,000 lbs of scrap metal in 8-10 hours.
Several years went by and the business began to transition and expand into brokering and trading scrap metal, additives, and ferroalloys. By the age of 24, Founder had established relationships with domestic and international mills/foundries that led to secured annual contracts for scrap raw materials. This helped scale the company into moving 1,500 mts of non-ferrous monthly.
Years passed by, and the vision of the company began to unfold. The direction was to circle back to the Founder’s earlier days of junk removal and peddling. The objective was to complete the full supply chain of the metal recycling industry by setting up scrap yards, strategically located across Western Canada. Through the support of valuable lifelong relationships that the Founder made in his early 20s in the industry, numerous critical acquisitions were completed that drove Mitchell Metal Recycling and MR to the present day. MR has a bright future and aims to continue servicing the metal recycling sector!
